3 Things We Know About Velociraptor Behavior

Velociraptors were one of many predators that lived during the Mesozoic era. Although these creatures are often seen in movies, how they act on the big screen doesn’t always reflect scientific fact. In this article, we’ve highlighted three fascinating things we know about Velociraptor behavior.

They Were Fierce

All animals evolve according to what they need to survive. Since Velociraptors had razor-sharp claws, it’s safe to assume they used their talons to defend themselves or attack prey. Since their forelimbs were shorter than the back ones, they could also use their arms to grab prey.

It’s quite likely that these dinosaurs used their claws in similar ways to modern birds. Velociraptors could have used their claws when grabbing prey to hold it down before delivering a killing blow.

Dino Fact

The Velociraptor’s talons were 3 inches long, giving it the ultimate weapon for hunting other animals.

They Were Smart

Another thing we know about Velociraptor behavior is that they were fairly intelligent animals. One way scientists back up this claim is by evaluating the Velociraptor’s brain to body size. Given that it had a fairly large brain for its size, it would’ve been an intelligent dinosaur, but not smarter than humans.

Moreover, the Velociraptor’s size and reputation suggest that it may have been intelligent. Compared to other apex predators, the Velociraptor was small, only around 1.6 feet tall at the hip. Despite their short stature, these beasts were among the apex predators of what is now central and eastern Asia during the Late Cretaceous period.

Becoming an apex predator wouldn’t be possible if Velociraptor were unintelligent. Hunting requires skill and tactics. They’d have to stalk their prey and plan for the perfect time to strike and land a killing blow.

Dino Fact

Some scientists believe that Velociraptors hunted in packs. If this is true, it further proves their intelligence, as they’d have to communicate with one another for a successful pursuit of prey.

They Were Scavengers

Although it’s hard to say for sure, some scientists believe that Velociraptors were opportunistic creatures. This means that they both hunted and scavenged for prey. They could eat carcasses, steal prey from other dinosaurs, or feast on eggs by scavenging.

Paleontologists believe these theropods scavenged because of bite marks they’ve found in the remains of other dinosaurs.
