Nathan G. –
I feel like there’s not too much for me to say about this set design-wise, as it’s entirely made up of recolours of existing releases that already have their own reviews. I’m not a MoTU fan, so I also can’t speak to this set’s appeal to collectors of that franchise. But as a Cyberzoic fan, this is by far my favourite colour variant of the Saberbeast armour.
The red used for the armour is striking without feely overly toyish, and the coppery colour used for the detailing is shared with the Razorhound and Pyrodactyl, making this armour a natural fit for the Fire Clan (I put it on my black Smilodon, and it looks fantastic). Similarly, the shades of gold and crimson used on the Zora Kett figure also match closely colours used on the Fire Guard and Knight figures. Meanwhile, the colourscheme of the Smilodon honours the MoTU character it’s intended to evoke without seeming out-of-place within the Cyberzoic world (helped by the lore details included on the box). I’d love to see future releases lean into this genetic engineering angle to justify some more unusual colourschemes like this one.
