Was the T. rex the King?
Many know the T. rex as a fearsome beast and phenomenal hunter. Scientists often name a species according to the animal’s key traits when they discover it. The T. rex must have been a threat to other animals with a name that means “tyrant lizard king.”
Paleontologists likely viewed T. rex as the perfect name because of the species’ massive size. Many top predators in today’s animal kingdom are also among the largest carnivores in their area. A bigger body often means more strength; it’s also harder for small predators to attack larger ones due to the size difference.
Qualities That Made the T. rex King
This prehistoric reptile was king of its environment due to its massive size, serrated teeth, and ability to track its prey. Moreover, the T. rex had a large brain-to-body ratio, meaning it was intelligent, which helped the animal hunt prey and defend its territory.
The T. rex’s size, combined with its intelligence and ability to fight, allowed it to easily kill other dinosaurs. This tactic would give the animal its high ranking among the prehistoric apex predators as the species evolved.
One of Many Kings
Was T. rex really the king of the dinosaurs? Although we call it that, it was one of many rulers. Like other apex predators, the T. rex was only the tyrant lizard of its territory—areas now known as Montana and Wyoming in the US. Moreover, this beast only ruled during the Cretaceous period, at the end of the Mesozoic era. However, other predators would have ruled over the territory before this time.
For instance, dinosaurs such as the Allosaurus lived during the Jurassic period in what we now know as Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and Montana, USA, in addition to parts of Africa and Australia. This dinosaur was a predecessor to the T. rex and was an apex predator during this period.
