Protoceratops vs. Velociraptor: Which Would Have Won?

When we look at different dinosaur species, it’s fun to imagine how two might go toe-to-toe. Some matchups are purely hypothetical, while others—like the Velociraptor and Protoceratops—could realistically have happened. Let’s jump into the ring and see whether the Protoceratops or Velociraptor would’ve won.
The Protoceratops
First, we have the Protoceratops, a small herbivorous dinosaur that shared an evolutionary lineage with the well-known Triceratops. This ceratopsian lived in what is now Mongolia during the late Cretaceous period.
A Protoceratops was pretty small, measuring 6-8 feet long and 3 feet tall, about the size of a modern sheep. This species had a small frill and no horns, which may have posed challenges for self-defense.
Some scientists suspect that the Protoceratops may have used its sharp beak to bite attackers. Fossilized evidence, such as the “Fighting Dinosaur” fossil, shows a Protoceratops’ beak clamped onto a Velociraptor’s arm.
The Velociraptor
Velociraptors were incredible predators that moved quickly and nimbly. Like the Protoceratops, this beast lived in what is now Mongolia during the late Cretaceous period, meaning the two would’ve encountered one another quite a bit.
While Velociraptors were predators, they were small, measuring 6-7 feet long and 1.5-2 feet tall; most scientists compare their size to that of a modern turkey. These beasts have razor-sharp claws, a sickle-shaped nail on their second toe, and serrated teeth. All of these features made the Velociraptors a dangerous threat to various weaker dinosaurs.
Who Would Win?
When it comes down to whether the Protoceratops or Velociraptor would win, the answer isn’t as clear-cut as most of us would hope. While Protoceratops were animals of prey and Velociraptors were predators, it doesn’t automatically mean the latter would win.
The Protoceratops was a bit larger than the Velociraptor and often lived in packs, making it harder for predators to attack individual members of the species. However, some scientists also hypothesize that Velociraptors hunted in packs, as many modern predators do.
Ultimately, an encounter between a Protoceratops and a Velociraptor could go either way. There were likely times when the Protoceratops used its larger size, strong beak, and defensive tactics to get the upper hand. Other times, a Velociraptor’s speed, agility, and sharp claws could make it the victor.
Buy Dinosaur Action Figures
While you can’t see a Protoceratops or Velociraptor fight in real life, you can create imaginary scenes with Creative Beast Studio’s Velociraptor figures and other dinosaur action figures. Set them up, stage the battle, and let your imagination decide who comes out on top. Each encounter you create can play out differently, just like it might have millions of years ago.
