Sizing Up the Different Tyrannosaurids of the Mesozoic Era
Tyrannosaurids were some of the largest and most terrifying dinosaurs to ever walk our planet. These beasts were powerful and intelligent, not to mention skilled hunters that came in a range of sizes. While some Tyrannosaurids were no bigger than the average deer, others were nearly the size of a two-story house. Let’s size up the different Tyrannosaurids of the Mesozoic Era.
Moros
When we hear the word “Tyrannosaurid,” most of us think of large, ferocious dinosaurs, but the Moros intrepidus indicates that this isn’t the case. Standing at three feet tall and weighing around 170 pounds, this tyrannosaur was around the size of a deer. Don’t let that relatively small size fool you, though! This dinosaur was a fierce predator that ate small animals and dinosaurs living in its environment.
Moros lived in what is now the US state of Utah during the mid-Cretaceous period. Paleontologists first uncovered fossils of these dinosaurs in 2013 and officially classified them in 2019. What’s most interesting about this beast is that its remains show that Tyrannosaurids gradually grew larger over millions of years.
Tarbosaurus
The Tarbosaurus bataar was a large Tyrannosaurid that lived in what is now Mongolia during the Late Cretaceous period. This carnivorous beast was around 33 to 39 feet long and weighed between 9,900 and 11,000 pounds, making it a major threat to any prey in the area. On top of that, paleontologists hypothesized that the Tarbosaurus could run about 24 miles per hour, allowing it to easily catch its meals.
Moreover, the Tarbosaurus had serrated teeth like the T. rex (its relative) that allowed it to easily slice through meat whenever it ate. However, the Tarbosaurus had much smaller teeth than the T. rex, and it also had shorter arms than its “cousin.”
T. rex
We can’t size up the different Tyrannosaurids of the Mesozoic Era without mentioning the Tyrannosaurus rex. After all, the T. rex is one of the largest and most famous Tyrannosaurids and a dinosaur that most of us recognize instantly. This beast lived in what is now the Western Hemisphere of North America during the Late Cretaceous period.
As an apex predator, the T. rex had a variety of food options, including Triceratops, Ankylosaurus, Corythosaurus, and even fellow Tyrannosaurids. Eating armored dinosaurs wasn’t too much of a challenge for the T. rex since it had one of the strongest bite forces for land animals, up to 12,814 pounds!
