The Science Behind Velociraptor Claws: Nature’s Hunting Tool

Every dinosaur had physical features that helped it survive and flourish in the dangerous Mesozoic landscape. While some beasts were massive, others had sharp teeth or talons. Take the Velociraptor, for example. Its razor-sharp claws helped it grip and kill prey.

Want to learn even more about these fearsome creatures? Continue reading for a fascinating glimpse into the science behind Velociraptor claws and how they used them as nature’s hunting tools.

How Did Velociraptors Use Their Claws?

Velociraptors most likely used their claws while hunting to grab, pin, or possibly slash at prey. This dinosaur had sickle-shaped claws on the second digit, which could hook into another animal’s flesh, making escape difficult or impossible. Likewise, the Velociraptor could use its claws to pin an animal down on the ground before making the killing blow.

While some experts believe that Velociraptors may have slashed at prey, others claim that the claws weren’t sharp enough for this action to be productive. That said, it may have used its talons to stab prey.

How Do We Know Their Claws Were Tools?

Scientists base their hypotheses on how Velociraptors used their claws, as evidenced by fossilized remains. For instance, paleontologists evaluate the dinosaur’s anatomy and its blade-like claws. Since the second-toe claw is different than the Velociraptor’s other claws, it must have served a purpose. Not to mention, this sickle-shaped claw supported extra tendons and joints that allowed it to retract and flex, further indicating it held a situation-specific purpose.

Scientists also looked at modern relatives of dinosaurs, which are today’s birds, to form hypotheses. Most birds of prey use their talons to grab their kill when they swoop down during a hunt. Since theropods are ancestors to modern birds, we can assume that this behavior started with the dinosaurs.

Moreover, we have some potential evidence that Velociraptors used their claws to hunt. The Fighting Dinosaurs fossil holds the remains of a Protoceratops trapped in combat with a Velociraptor; the theropod’s talon remains stuck in the ceratopsian’s neck.

Why Retractable Claws Matter

Some animals today, such as lions and house cats, still have retractable claws. By analyzing claw usage and behavior in modern animals, scientists can better guess how dinosaurs may have used them.
