Are There Any Dinosaurs Still Living Today?

Dinosaurs are among the earliest creatures to walk on and rule our planet. While their existence spanned several million years, a mass extinction wiped out most of life on Earth. Many of us wonder whether any dinosaurs survived the extinction event that ended their reign and killed off these prehistoric animals. Find out if there are any dinosaurs still living today.
Which Species Come From Dinosaurs?
Technically, dinosaurs are not alive in the modern age, or at least not in the way we think of them. Beasts like the T. rex, Velociraptor, Triceratops, and Brachiosaurus died millions of years ago. However, animals that share the family tree of select beasts—such as Velociraptors—are alive today.
Birds are one of the closest living relatives to theropods; their ancestors were among the only creatures to survive the mass extinction that occurred at the end of the Mesozoic era. Fascinatingly, birds share various characteristics with their prehistoric ancestors, such as feathers.
Crocodiles are also closely related to dinosaurs and are one of the oldest living animals on Earth, as their family tree dates back millions of years. While birds and crocodiles look nothing alike, they share early ancestors, making them distant relatives.
Are There Modern Relatives of All Dinosaurs?
While some dinosaurs passed on their genes, others did not. This is largely because species that failed to evolve through selective breeding eventually died off.
Conversely, feathered dinosaurs that could run and briefly glide through the air were more likely to escape danger and hunt prey. The easier it is for a species to survive, the likelier it is to breed. These dinosaurs would pass on their gliding abilities, eventually leading to flight for some of their bird descendants.
How Do We Determine Dinosaur Descendants?
While wondering if any dinosaurs are still living today, you may also question how scientists know specifically which animals share a family tree with prehistoric beasts. After all, we can’t go back in time to witness the evolution of these creatures.
Paleontologists can determine the relationship between extinct and modern species by comparing the structures of ancient fossils to those living today. For example, like select dinosaurs, birds have feathers, hollow bones, and lay eggs. Sharing features increases the likelihood that they’re related.
Could Dinosaurs Live in the Modern Age?
Although we can’t say for sure, it’s highly unlikely that the dinosaurs we love studying could exist in today’s world. Earth’s current atmosphere and geographic structure vastly differ from those of millions of years ago. During the Mesozoic era, there were higher CO2 levels, and the climate was much warmer than today.
Due to major environmental differences, actual dinosaurs likely could not exist in our modern world without adaptation. Many of us call this “adaptation” evolution—the species would change over millions of years to survive. So while we don’t have creatures like Velociraptors, we do have their descents, such as chickens.
