T. rex
Out of the hundreds of dinosaurs that scientists have discovered thus far, the T. rex is one of the most well-known. Paleontologists first uncovered this beast in 1902 in Hell Creek, Montana, and it was one of the largest theropods ever discovered.
Paleontologists named the beast “Tyrannosaurs rex” because the name means Tyrant Lizard King; based on its massive size, it was safe to assume that the T. rex was an apex predator and “king” of its territory.
One of the most iconic features of the T. rex is its little arms, which were not vestigial but likely had limited function. Some paleontologists theorize that the dinosaur may have used its forelimbs to move its prey while eating it.

Velociraptor means “swift robber” and comes from the dinosaur’s ability to quickly and efficiently hunt its prey. Like many other theropods, Velociraptors had sharp teeth and a large claw on each foot, which they used for hunting.

Scientists found partial remains of a Brachiosaurus in 1900 in the Grand River Canyon of western Colorado, United States. The lead paleontologist, Elmer S. Riggs, named the beast “Brachiosaurus altithorax because it means “arm lizard.
This sauropod was one of the largest dinosaurs to walk the planet and lived in what is now North America during the Late Jurassic period. This beast was roughly 59-72 feet long and around 42 feet tall.
Triceratops
The Triceratops is another of the most famous dinosaurs ever found. Interestingly, scientists uncovered the species in 1887 but initially thought it was a bison’s remains due to its body shape and horns. However, upon further inspection, scientists realized that the bones belonged to a dinosaur—the Triceratops!
Scientists named this dinosaur “Triceratops” because “tri” means three, and it had three horns. “Ops” means face and relates to the horns on the dinosaur’s face. Aside from their horns, other key features of the Triceratops include their head frill and beak-shaped mouth.
