4 Ceratopsian Dinosaur Species Explained for Kids

Learning about dinosaurs is thrilling, no matter how old or young you may be. Exploring the fascinating Age of the Dinosaurs is a great way for children to learn about Earth’s history. Ceratopsians were one of many magnificent dinosaur species that thrived during the Mesozoic Era. Below, we provide a kid-friendly explanation about four Ceratopsian dinosaur species.

Styracosaurus

This interesting dinosaur lived during the Cretaceous Period, the final period of the Mesozoic Era. Similar to other Ceratopsians, the Styracosaurus was a herbivore who mainly feasted on ferns, cycads, and other greenery. Also, like other ceratopsians, these dinosaurs had several horns along their frills and on their noses.

Styracosaurus lived in North America. More specifically, these dinosaurs lived in what’s now Alberta, Canada, and Montana, United States. Moreover, paleontologists theorize that these animals lived or at least traveled in groups.

Diabloceratops

Given that “Diablo” is the Spanish word for devil, the Diabloceratops sounds quite terrifying! However, this dinosaur simply gets its name from its fierce looks. The beast had two large horns sticking out of the top of its frill and two more just above the eyes.

While fossils of this dinosaur may look rather scary, it’s unlikely the animal acted with aggression unless prompted. Diabloceratops were strictly plant-eaters, so they had to hide from carnivorous predators sharing the area.

Centrosaurus

Next in our list of ceratopsian dinosaur species explained for kids is the Centrosaurus. This 6,000-pound dinosaur was around 20 feet long. Like fellow ceratopsians, this prehistoric reptile walked on all fours and had a beak-shaped mouth, a large frill on its head, and horns. This species is another ceratopsian that likely lived in groups, as paleontologists have found bone beds with fossils of various Centrosaurus grouped together.

Triceratops

We’ve saved one of the best for last—the beloved triceratops! The triceratops are among the most popular dinosaurs, and we easily recognize them. This dinosaur had two large horns above its eyes and a third above its beaked mouth. Moreover, the Triceratops were between 9.5 and 9.8 feet tall and weighed between 13,000 and 26,000 pounds.

Triceratops lived in many areas of the United States during the end of the Cretaceous Period. Therefore, they were among the animals that lived just before the massive asteroid hit our planet.
