What Was the Natural Habitat of a Velociraptor?

When we imagine what the world looked like when dinosaurs ruled, many of us envision a lush rainforest. Technically, that thought is correct, but only for some regions of the world, predominantly during the Jurassic period. Beasts like the Velociraptor lived in a reasonably dry, desert-like region with very little vegetation. Let’s take a closer look at what the natural habitat of the Velociraptor was like.

Where and When Did the Velociraptor Live?

The Velociraptor was a theropod that lived during the Late Cretaceous period in what is now the Gobi Desert in Mongolia, Central Asia. The Cretaceous period directly followed the Jurassic and was the final chapter of the Mesozoic era. During this time, Earth was quite a bit warmer than today—there were no polar ice caps—leaving all regions quite hot.

What Was Its Environment Like?

Interestingly, the Gobi Desert is one of the very few places on Earth that is quite similar today to what it was like during the Velociraptor’s life. Due to this, we can hypothesize that the region had arid conditions, sand dunes, and sparse vegetation. Of course, this wasn’t much of an issue for carnivores like the Velociraptor since it feasted on other dinosaurs and early mammals.

Although the Gobi Desert was (and still is) dry, rocky, and sandy, it likely still experienced seasonal changes like it does today. For example, there may have been wet periods where it rained more often, as well as times of drought. As with all dinosaurs, the environment directly shaped the Velociraptor’s evolution. With a small and agile body, this beast could easily navigate the rocky terrain as it tracked prey.

Dino Fact

It’s commonly believed that the Velociraptor hunted and scavenged for food, which would make sense based on the region. During dry periods, finding fresh prey in the Gobi Desert may have been hard. By stealing a bit of another dinosaur’s catch, the Velociraptor increased its own chances of survival.

What Dinosaurs Lived Alongside It?

Learning about the natural environment of the Velociraptor also involves understanding the other dinosaurs that lived near it. After all, creatures living in an environment help form the ecosystem and food chain. Beasts that lived alongside the Velociraptor during this period include:

  • Protoceratops
  • Oviraptor
  • Tarbosaurus

While Protoceratops was likely a common food source for many large predators, the Oviraptor and Tarbosaurus may have indirectly competed with the Velociraptor for food and territory. However, it’s unlikely that they posed direct threats to one another, as both occupied slightly different ecological niches.

Being smaller and primarily an omnivore, the Oviraptor was not much of a danger to the Velociraptor. On the other hand, the Tarbosaurus, a massive apex predator, focused on larger prey like Protoceratops, while Velociraptors likely hunted smaller mammals and scavenged or targeted eggs.
