What You Might Not Know About Raptors Revealed

Raptors have fascinated humanity for centuries, and these creatures live all over the world. While dinosaur lovers may initially think of select prehistoric reptiles when they hear “raptor,” other people may think of certain birds of prey. Both answers are correct, as birds come from this dinosaur family! This blog reveals what you might not know about raptors.
There Are Many Types of Raptors
When dinosaurs ruled the Earth, there were at least 25 different types of raptors. We do not know the exact number of raptors that lived because paleontologists are still uncovering different species of dinosaurs. These are some notable raptor species:
- Velociraptor
- Utahraptor
- Microraptor
- Acheroraptor
These dinosaurs came in a range of sizes and lived in various regions of the world. Two key traits that all these raptors had in common were that they were bipedal and meat eaters.
Dino Fact
Based on current fossil knowledge, paleontologists conclude that the Utahraptor was the largest raptor dinosaur, and the Microraptor was the smallest.
Some Raptors Could Glide
Paleontologists suspect that most—if not all—raptor dinosaurs had feathers along their bodies. Although dinosaurs could not fly, feathers could help them glide as they ran after prey. Unlike flight, gliding is only for short distances, such as leaping from one tree to another.
Today’s Raptors Are Different
One of the most interesting things you might not know about raptors is that they’re still around today. If you look up the term “raptors,” you’ll see depictions of dinosaurs alongside modern raptors—birds.
Various birds, such as hawks, falcons, and eagles, are predators similar to their ancestors. These animals track and hunt small mammals for their meals, similar to how their prehistoric predecessors would have.
It’s unlikely that every type of raptor evolved into birds; however, specific species did. For example, the Velociraptor shares close relations with modern birds. Small raptors were likely able to evolve because they had an easier time hiding from predators.
Raptors Are Amazing Hunters
Both prehistoric and modern raptors are phenomenal at hunting. Not only are animals from this group fierce, but they are also highly intelligent. Most modern raptors have incredible eyesight to spot prey from great distances. Their talons and beaks are also highly specialized for catching and tearing apart prey.
