Coelophysis: The Lean Predator of the Late Triassic

When we think about dinosaurs, most of the species that come to mind lived during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. However, fascinating beasts such as Coelophysis ruled the Triassic. This early theropod offers a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of predatory dinosaurs and the ecosystems they lived in. Learn all about this predator of the Late Triassic.
Where Did It Live?
Coelophysis was a theropod, a term that means “beast-footed”; these creatures walked on two legs and ate meat. Coelophysis lived over 200 million years ago during the Late Triassic period, during the beginning of the Mesozoic era. Fossil records indicate that it lived in what is now North America, specifically in the southwestern United States.
Paleontologists have unearthed most bone beds in New Mexico, indicating that the dinosaur predominantly lived there or at least migrated through the area. Bone beds also suggest that the dinosaur likely had some group behavior; they may have hunted, lived, or traveled together.
What Did It Look Like?
Another interesting fact about Coelophysis is that this lean predator of the Late Triassic was a relatively small dinosaur that weighed only around 60 pounds and was 10 feet long. Compare that to the size of colossal beasts that would later arise, like the T. rex, which weighed about 8 tons.
Coelophysis had long, slender legs and a long tail, which made it more aerodynamic and helped it maintain balance as it ran after its next meal. This beast also had a pointed snout and serrated teeth that it used to grind up meat as it ate its prey.
Dino Fact
Like other theropods, Coelophysis had fairly short arms, but they were strong and flexible. It used its sharp claws to strike, catch, and kill animals.
What Did They Eat?
As a carnivorous dinosaur, Coelophysis would’ve solely eaten meat. However, unlike most well-known predators, they wouldn’t have feasted on the herbivorous dinosaurs that most of us recognize by name. Since they lived during the early Mesozoic era, they likely ate small lizards, early mammals, and amphibians.
Additionally, many scientists believe that Coelophysis scavenged on the remains of other animals, making it an opportunistic meat-eater. This is a behavior later theropods, like the Velociraptor, would share.
