An Interesting Look Into How Dinosaurs Slept

Every animal relies on sleep since it allows the body to recharge, and dinosaurs were no exception to this rule. Many species have specific ways of sleeping. While most people sleep on their back or side, many animals lie on their stomachs and curl up. Here’s an interesting look into how dinosaurs slept.
Some Stood Up
Some scientists theorize that some sauropods slept in a standing position. This theory stems from the fact that many modern large animals—giraffes, horses, and elephants—do so today. Large animals weigh more, so getting up may take longer than it would for a small creature; if a predator is on the attack, the sauropod may not be able to escape in time. However, if an animal sleeps standing up, it’s already worked out half of its escape plan.
Some Layed Down
Although some dinosaurs likely slept lying down, they were likely not in a full lying position. Some fossil records indicate that the T-rex spent most of its time in a sitting or standing position, as evidenced by the stress signs along the hip and leg bones. However, it’s worth noting that all paleontologists do not agree with this theory on the T-rex, as there isn’t enough evidence proving that they slept this way.
Moreover, scientists speculate that some dinosaurs curled up like birds. This theory comes from the 2004 discovery of a fossilized theropod dinosaur called Mei Long, which was found in a sleeping position with its head tucked under its arm, much like modern birds.
Some Made Nests
Most paleontologists agree that certain theropods, such as the Velociraptor, built nests like their modern bird ancestors. From this theory, we can presume that prehistoric beasts also slept in nests as makeshift beds.
While Some Slept…
Other traits dinosaurs likely shared with today’s animals are being active at night (nocturnal) and being active during the day (diurnal). Theories surrounding these traits come from the shape of a dinosaur’s eye on the skull bone. Dinosaurs with larger eyes or wider scleral ring openings were likelier to be nocturnal, as these features helped them see better in low-light conditions.
How Do We Know For Sure?
It’s important to note that many theories are speculative when looking into how dinosaurs slept. It’s hard to give an exact answer because no one was there to observe. Most of what scientists must go on are fossil records and modern animal behaviors.
