Herrerasaurus: The Apex Predator of the Triassic?

Herrerasaurus: The Apex Predator of the Triassic?

Apex predators have shaped ecosystems for hundreds of millions of years. They regulate populations and maintain ecological balance. The Age of Dinosaurs produced some of the most dangerous predators the planet has ever seen. While many of us recognize beasts such as the T. rex, Velociraptor, or Spinosaurus, they were by no means the only ones roaming the earth. Learn about the Herrerasaurus and how it thrived as an apex predator of the Triassic.

What Did It Look Like?

Measuring 10–13 feet long and weighing 300–500 pounds, the Herrerasaurus was a large beast by Triassic standards. Like other prehistoric predators, it had a long, narrow head and sharp, serrated teeth that helped it tear up meat.

The Herrerasaurus had two strong hind legs on which it stood and ran, as well as a long tail that may have acted as a counterweight during running. It also had short arms with three curved claws that helped it grab and hold prey.

Dino Fact

Given its physical traits, most scientists consider it an early theropod, or at least similar to one.

When and Where Did It Live?

The Triassic period spanned several million years, so simply saying a dinosaur lived during it is a bit vague. Herrerasaurus lived 231–228 million years ago during the Carnian stage in the late Triassic period.

Additionally, this beast lived in what is now northwestern Argentina in the Ischigualasto Formation. During its life, this area was likely warm, supporting river floodplains, forests, and lush growth. This environment provided the perfect food source for herbivores, which meant the Herrerasaurus also had a large selection of prey at its disposal.

How Did It Get Its Name?

Scientists named the Herrerasaurus after the ranger who first uncovered it in 1958, Victorino Herrera. The second half of its name, -saurus, comes from the Greek word sauros, which means lizard. Its full species name is Herrerasaurus ischigualastensis, with ischigualastensis referring to the Ischigualasto Formation. When we put it all together, the dinosaur’s name means “Herrera’s lizard from Ischigualasto.”

Did It Have Competition?

Another interesting fact about this Triassic apex predator is that Herrerasaurus faced limited competition, as it was one of the first apex predators. While it had to fight with members of its own species as well as Eoraptors and Staurikosaurus, it had less competition than later theropods like the T. rex.
