What Are the Main Characteristics of the Raptor Dinosaur?

Scientists use specific traits to place animals into distinct groups and families, allowing us to better understand each species. “Raptor” is the informal title for the Dromaeosauridae family, a group of bipedal, fierce predators that lived during the Mesozoic era. Not sure what makes these species stand out? Learn the main characteristics of raptor dinosaurs that we’ve detailed below.

Bipedal

A dinosaur’s walk can reveal a lot about its life, and one of the biggest clues is whether it moved on two legs or four. All raptors were bipedal, meaning they walked on two legs. Keep in mind that this does not mean that every dinosaur that walked on two legs was a raptor! It’s just one of the raptor’s many characteristics.

Agile

Walking on two legs directly impacted another characteristic of raptors: it made them incredibly agile. Because of their build and walking posture, these dinosaurs could shift their weight to their hind legs, allowing them to move faster than species that walked on all fours.

Moreover, raptors had long, flexible tails, which helped counterbalance them when they pursued prey or made sharp turns. Without this balance, they likely would’ve lost stability or traction in pursuit of food, resulting in lost opportunities.

Sharp Claws and Teeth

All raptors had serrated teeth and razor-sharp claws that they used to grab, catch, hold, and tear apart prey. While some species, like Velociraptors, had large sickle-shaped claws, most had sharp, curved ones.

Predatory

Another key characteristic of raptor dinosaurs is that they were predatory animals, meaning they strictly ate meat. Their agile nature amplified this trait, leading to many raptor species becoming apex predators in their territory.

For example, the Utahraptor was most likely at or near the top of its food chain in (as the name implies) what is now Utah during the early Cretaceous period. Likewise, the Velociraptor was a midlevel predator in what’s now Mongolia during the late Cretaceous period.

Dino Fact

Modern-day raptors are still predatory animals—in fact, we call them birds of prey! Similar to their ancestors, they have sharp talons and keen senses that help them track food.

Feathered

All raptors also had colorful feathers, which helped them survive in the Mesozoic landscape. We know these animals had feathers because of the quill knobs on their bones.

Most scientists hypothesize that raptors had feathers to help them balance as they ran after prey, making them more aerodynamic, and for temperature regulation. It’s important to note that their feathers did not allow them to fly; their descendants did not evolve the ability to fly for millions of years.
